Nowadays, it’s incredibly common to hire a professional wedding speech writer, but with new writers on the market each day, how do you choose the right person?
Below, I’ll offer 7 suggestions on how to choose the best wedding speech writer for you!
Not sure if you want to hire a professional speech writer? Check out my blog on 5 Reasons to Hire a Professional Wedding Speech Writer!
1. Look for wedding speech writing experience
Have they written wedding speeches before, or are they brand new to the market? If they aren’t new, how long have they been writing wedding speeches?
While you certainly don’t need to hire an expert with 20+ years of experience, it’s worth considering how long they’ve been doing this or related experience that highlights their writing qualifications. While it doesn’t guarantee their writing is what you’re looking for, it’s a worthy consideration.
2. Look for wedding speech reviews
This is the easiest way to learn about a writer and what you can expect from them. Don’t get discouraged if there are a couple bad reviews in a sea of positive reviews, but take notice if a majority of the reviews are negative or even lukewarm.
3. Read the professional about me page
An about me page is a great way to learn about the writer’s style and personality and can help you decide if they’re a good fit for you (sometimes we just know if we’re not going to work well with someone from their about me page).
4. What does the wedding speech writer offer?
Do they offer fast speeches? Heartfelt speeches? Funny speeches? Do they offer zoom calls? Email questionnaires?
Consider what you’re looking for, and then look for a writer who offers services in that style.
For example, I specialize in meaningful and loving speeches with communication only through email, which works best for my writing style. However, I know for some potential clients, they want phone calls and zoom meetings, and while I respect that, it means I’m not the right fit for them, so I’m always happy to recommend people to other writers who better match their style.
It doesn’t benefit you to work with someone who doesn’t offer what you want, so learn about the writer beforehand to help ensure you’re the right match.
5. Look for someone whose values match your own.
This might not seem important, but remember, we vote with our money, so it’s a powerful statement to share your money with another person. There’s immense value in sharing your money with people whose values match your own.
Do you care about inclusivity? Animal rights? Education? Look for people who talk about issues that you care about and who put their money where their mouth is.
6. Look for a Client/Writer agreement.
While you might not think you need a contract for something if you’re not spending a lot of money on it, it’s still a business relationship, and a contract keeps the relationship professional and everyone accountable. A contract also shows you that the writer has taken extra time to think about the relationship and is a sign of professionalism and respect for you and your time.
7. Budget and timelines
How long is their speech turnaround? Two weeks? One week? Do they offer rush services? Make sure you read the fine print and choose a writer who can work within your timeline.
Additionally, consider your budget. How much are you willing to pay for this service? What is it worth to you? Take your time to look at pricing for different speech lengths and timeframes and choose someone who can work within your budget. While someone might offer fantastic services, if their pricing is way out of your budget, there are plenty of other great options out there.
